The town of Kumanovo is the closest town to the capital Skopje. It is easy to reach, just 20 min drive on a main road, which makes it close to airport and all important institutions in the country. It is a very well-developed town, with beautiful and quiet mountain villages around. The infrastructure is very good and it is easy to get to the town from every point of the municipality.
There are many
landmarks in the area, such as the
Kokino rock. It is an important
megalithic observatory site approximately 30 km from the town of
Kumanovo,
near the village of Staro Nagorichane. It includes special stone markers
used to track the movement of Sun and Moon on the eastern horizon. The
importance of the site was confirmed by the space
agency NASA. It appears
fourth on the list of old observatories compiled by NASA. The area is also
rich with old monasteries and ancient churches. One of them is the St.
Nicholas church and the monastery
Beljakovo. This religious place is located
in the Kumanovo village of
Beljakovce, some 70 km east of Skopje. Before the
First World War, the monastery lived rich monastic life. In the garden, next
to the beautiful church Holy Mother of God, several stone crosses can be
found, as well as fountains and wells with healing powers.
